Rwanda – Projectupdate 2024
In our ‘Partners in Pellets’ project in Rwanda, we collaborate with our project partner BioMassters. In this post, you will read about the project’s activities in 2024 and the impact it has achieved so far on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For our Rwanda project, 2024 was a year dedicated to further growth. Together with our local partner BioMassters, we worked on making clean cooking more accessible, invested in user support, and took important steps to further improve the technology.
In total, the project achieved a CO₂ reduction of 5,224 tons in 2024. At the same time, the number of users continued to grow, laying the foundation for further scaling in the subsequent years.
New built-in model of the Mimi Moto
A major highlight was the introduction of a new built-in model of the Mimi Moto pellet stove. This model was specifically developed for kitchen integration, making clean cooking even more practical for households.
The stove is largely produced using locally sourced materials from Rwanda. In doing so, the project not only contributes to cleaner energy but also stimulates the local economy and employment.
Training as the key to successful use
A good cookstove only truly makes an impact when used correctly. Therefore, BioMassters organized training sessions for 2,785 users in 2024.
During these training sessions, participants learned how to optimize their use of the pellet stove, store pellets safely, and cook efficiently. This allows households to get a higher return from their stove and further increases the benefits for health, climate, and fuel consumption.

Pilot for clean cooking in schools
In addition to households, BioMassters also focused on schools in 2024. A first pilot was launched in which schools transitioned to pellet-based cooking.
The results were highly promising. The pilot demonstrated that clean cooking within educational institutions is not only technically feasible but also offers major benefits in terms of health, efficiency, and sustainability. As a result, 2024 formed the basis for the further expansion of this concept in the years that followed.
Record pellet sales
The growth of the project was also reflected in the demand for pellets. In 2024, a record volume of 113 tons of pellets was sold. This shows that an increasing number of households are actively choosing clean cooking and making the switch to a more sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.
Outlook
With an upgraded cookstove, thousands of trained users, a growing pellet market, and successful pilots, the Rwanda project established a solid foundation for further scaling in 2024. These developments set the stage for the next phase of the project, which will center on digital monitoring, expanding the distribution network, and delivering the first dMRV carbon credits.
