In this post, you can read about the project’s activities in 2025 and the impact it has had so far on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In 2025, the Indonesian biogas project received international recognition as an example of how clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and strong local communities can reinforce one another. Together with our project partner, Yayasan Rumah Energi (YRE), we continued to work on scaling up biogas production and making smart use of bio-slurry, enabling thousands of farmers to increase their incomes and make their farms more resilient to climate change.

The project demonstrates that the impact of a biogas plant extends far beyond just clean cooking. By converting waste into clean energy and a natural fertilizer, a circular system is created that strengthens both the climate and the local economy.

The power of togetherness

During a project visit in February 2025, colleagues Paul and Harry saw firsthand how deeply cooperation is rooted in Indonesian society. What stood out most was the local concept of semangat kebersamaan: the power of working together.

Within the biogas project, this sense of community comes to life every day. Farmers work together in cooperatives, share knowledge about the use of biogas and bio-slurry, and help one another improve their farms. By exchanging experiences and developing solutions together, sustainable innovations are adopted more quickly and gain broader support.

This collaboration serves as an important foundation for the project’s success and continued growth.

International recognition

A major milestone followed in December 2025. During the Climate Summit in Brazil, it was announced that the Indonesian biogas project had been selected as a pilot project for closer cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of the Environment and Gold Standard.

This selection underscores the quality of the project and confirms the international recognition of the way in which climate impact, sustainable agriculture, and social development are linked.

Long-term impact for farming families

The strength of the project is also evident from the experiences of users who have been working with biogas for more than ten years. Their stories show that the benefits are not temporary but, on the contrary, continue to grow over the long term.

One of them is Mr. Ahmad, a farmer from Jeneponto in South Sulawesi. Whereas he used to have to buy large quantities of chicken manure for his farmland, he now uses bio-slurry from his own biogas plant as a natural fertilizer.

Thanks to this switch, he is saving money, improving soil quality, and achieving higher yields on his land. His story shows how a biogas plant not only provides clean energy but also contributes to a stronger and more sustainable farm.

Knowledge as the foundation for lasting impact

In 2025, knowledge development remained an important part of the project. Users participated in training sessions on the maintenance of biogas digesters, the efficient use of biogas, and the application of bioslurry in agriculture. Combining this knowledge with practical experience creates a sustainable approach in which farmers continue to inspire and support one another. As a result, not only is the number of biogas plants growing, but so is the impact on agriculture, food security, and incomes.

Outlook

With international recognition, strong local partnerships, and thousands of farmers benefiting from biogas and bio-slurry every day, the Indonesian project demonstrated once again in 2025 how a climate solution can create lasting value. By combining clean energy with circular agriculture and knowledge sharing, we are working together to build resilient communities that are ready for the future.

In the Biogas project in Indonesia, we are working together with our project partners Biru Karbon Nusantara (BKN) and Yayasan Rumah Energi (YRE).
