Last week on April 13, we organized our relationship day of 2023: Deep Dive in Fair Climate Projects. This year the event took place at our customer Secrid in The Hague. On this day, relationships were strengthened and all questions regarding CO₂ compensation projects were answered. We look back on this inspiring day with great pleasure.

The program started with a welcome word by chairman and ambassador Nienke de la Rive Box and director Neera van der Geest. Impact Manager Robin Foolen from Secrid then took the floor to talk about their sustainability strategy.

Then we delved deeper into the world of CO₂ compensation. We started with a panel discussion with several experts present. Neera van der Geest and Marcel Spaas from FairClimateFund talked to Nadine Planzer from SustainCERT and Arine de Bordes from FORLIANCE about the criticism of CO₂ compensation projects and the developments in the voluntary carbon market and how it can be made future-proof. Transparency and honesty are our top priorities. The people most vulnerable to the effects of climate change should benefit most from carbon offset projects.

After a short break to process all the information, everyone was ready to go again. Two in-depth sessions about our Fair Climate Projects were organized, with a choice between a session about clean cooking projects and a session about nature-based solutions (NBS) projects. We discussed the complexity and challenges of setting up and monitoring this type of CO₂ compensation projects.

After current developments in the voluntary carbon market and our compensation projects were discussed, the focus shifted to the future. A second panel discussion provided more clarity on the question: How can the voluntary carbon market be made future-proof? Our panel members each gave their vision on the future of the carbon market, such as growth, regulation and digitalization. But above all: transparency & honesty.

We rounded off the day with a presentation by Elise Vonk, an expert in sustainable communication. She presented how companies can best communicate to stakeholders about their climate strategy. The core message is: avoid using hard claims such as CO₂ neutral or climate neutral, but rather tell your entire climate story clearly, including setbacks and highlights.

Important topics were discussed and new opportunities to work together towards a sustainable future were explored. We would like to thank Fairtrade Original for sponsoring the delicious goodie bags. And we thank Secrid for the hospitality and co-organization of this great day.

See you next year!
