Uganda – Projectupdate 2025
In the biogas project in Uganda, we work together with our project partner to provide households with livestock access to sustainable energy and climate-friendly agricultural solutions. This update highlights the activities carried out in 2025 and the impact the project has had so far on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Biogas digesters help families reduce their dependence on firewood and expensive fossil fuels. Cooking with biogas is cleaner, faster, and prevents harmful smoke emissions inside the home. This improves the health of especially women and children. In addition, the bioslurry produced by the digester serves as a natural fertiliser that improves soil health, increases crop yields, and reduces dependence on chemical fertilisers.

Restoring existing installations
In 2025, the project focused partly on restoring and optimising existing biogas installations. 160 biodigesters were successfully repaired, allowing households to regain access to clean energy and extending the lifespan of the installations.
Sustainable agriculture with bioslurry
Alongside clean energy, the project focused on strengthening sustainable agricultural practices. 77 groups of smallholder farmers were trained in the use of bioslurry to improve soil quality and increase agricultural production. The trainings focused on crops such as beans, peanuts, maize, tomatoes, and onions.
For dairy farmer Enock from Western Uganda, his biogas installation developed into a fully circular farming system. The manure from his cows is used both to generate energy and as a natural fertiliser for his land. As a result, his cows are healthier, milk production has increased, and he has reduced costs for animal feed and fertilisers.

The biogas project in Uganda demonstrates how sustainable energy and agriculture can reinforce each other. By providing families with access to clean cooking solutions and natural fertilisers, the project contributes to healthier households, improved agricultural yields, and greater resilience to climate change.
