In the Kenya Biogas Program project in Kenya, we are working together with our project partner ABPL (African Bioenergy Programs Ltd). In this post, you can read about the project’s activities in 2025 and the impact it has had so far on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In 2025, the biogas project in Kenya once again demonstrated that access to clean energy extends far beyond cooking alone. By combining biogas with the use of bio-slurry, a circular system is created in which agricultural waste is converted into sustainable energy and natural fertilizers. This benefits the climate, the soil, and farmers’ incomes. Together with our project partner Africa Bioenergy Program Limited (ABPL), we invested last year in knowledge, collaboration, and the further professionalization of the project.

Fairtrade Certification for the Biogas Project
A major milestone was the project’s registration under the Fairtrade Climate Standard.
The project now includes 66 farmer groups, comprising a total of approximately 2,400 dairy farmers who produce biogas from animal manure. Thanks to Fairtrade certification, farmers have a greater say in the proceeds from carbon credits, and investments are made in the further development of their communities.
National Network for Biogas users
To further encourage the exchange of knowledge, the National Association of Biodigester Users Hub was established in 2025. This national network brings together biogas users, experts, and local organizations. By sharing experiences and jointly developing solutions, it becomes easier to scale up biogas facilities and further strengthen sustainable agriculture.

Training Programs for future-proof agriculture
Training programs remained a central focus in 2025 as well. In addition to technical knowledge about the installation and maintenance of biogas digesters, participants received practical guidance on sustainable agriculture. Farmers learned how to make optimal use of bio-slurry to improve soil quality, achieve higher yields, and reduce their dependence on chemical fertilizers. This creates new sources of income and makes farms more resilient to climate change.
Farmers invest in each other
The strength of the project lies in the people who share their knowledge.
Farmer Mary Wangui uses bio-slurry to make compost and organic leaf fertilizer. Her farm has since become a demonstration site where other farmers learn how to combine sustainable agriculture with biogas.
Samuel Kiarie also demonstrates the impact a biogas digester can have. His system provides four households with clean energy and significantly reduces energy costs. He uses the bio-slurry from his system to cultivate Azolla, a protein-rich aquatic plant that serves as livestock feed and supports fish farming. This creates a circular system in which virtually no waste is lost.

Outlook
With Fairtrade certification, the establishment of a national user network, and a growing focus on circular agriculture, the Kenyan biogas project took further significant steps forward in 2025. The project demonstrates that climate solutions not only lead to lower CO₂ emissions but also contribute to stronger communities, healthier soils, and more sustainable incomes for farmers.
