fair carbon food systems: from farm to fork

News – 02 November 2022

Every year the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) organizes the Conference of the Parties (COP). This year to be held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, Africa. During this conference, governments will build on previous climate agreements to delay climate change and maintain a liveable earth for all. But during the conference, not only governments but all stakeholders get a chance to advocate their visions.

Climate justice
To achieve climate justice Cordaid and FairClimateFund will advocate for firmer international climate action. Our plea includes the following topics and advocacy messages:

  • Promote climate-resilient agri-food systems
  • Ensure a fair transition to zero-carbon economies
  • Ensure fair and balanced climate finance
  • Establish a facility to fund Loss & Damage
  • Better protect internally displaced people
  • Ensure a focus on gender equality in all climate actions

Side-event
“Cordaid and FairClimateFund call for the transformation towards climate-resilient agri-food systems. Food systems are responsible for nearly 30% of Greenhouse Gas emissions. From farm to fork, supply chain actors are stepping up and taking action to mitigate their carbon footprints. At the same time, smallholder and family farmers need support to shape agricultural systems that feed the people while being adapted to the changing climate. During COP27, Cordaid and FairClimateFund will host a side-event to explain how the carbon market can play a role and secure adaptation and co-benefits for local farmers beyond mitigation.“ says Neera van der Geest, director of FairClimateFund.

During the side-event we will share the main lessons learnt by the impact assessment of the carbon methodology: Fairtrade Climate Standard. We illustrate what kind of support is needed for smallholder and family farmers to shape agricultural systems that feed the people while adapting to the changing climate. Second, we will dive into the “food print” of the food system using the Science Based Targets Initiative and focus on Scope 3 emissions. We will explore solutions for mitigation and adaptation using examples such as our climate project: Birds, Bees and Business in Burkina Faso. To finish, we will share lessons and recommendations for policymakers.
