Clean cooking solutions
The problem: cooking on a wood fire
Currently, more than a quarter of the world’s population still cooks over open fires, often with wood. This creates a lot of smoke in the home, which is detrimental to health. Women and children, in particular, become ill from it, and millions of people die prematurely every year because of it. Searching for firewood is time-consuming, resulting in children going to school less often and women having fewer opportunities for work or other activities. It’s also bad for the environment: cutting down trees destroys forests, damages the soil, and exacerbates the climate crisis.
The solution: clean cooking projects
Clean cooking solutions are urgently needed to achieve climate and development goals worldwide. Despite these serious consequences, there is still too little money and attention for this problem. To solve this, more support is needed from governments and investors. Businesses can help by investing in cleaner cooking projects that also focus on sustainable agriculture and nature conservation. If nothing changes, 2 billion people will still be dependent on polluting cooking methods in 2030.
FairClimateFund finances and implements climate projects focused on cleaner cooking methods. Our projects, certified according to the Gold Standard and/or Fairtrade Climate Standard, generate carbon credits that we sell to companies that want to take their sustainability strategy to the next level. These companies contribute to global CO₂ reduction and a better life for those most vulnerable to climate change.
The benefits of clean cooking solutions
- Better health
Reduces air pollution in the home, thereby reducing respiratory diseases, heart problems and premature mortality. Women and children, who often spend time in the kitchen, are particularly less at risk of health problems.
- Reducing CO2 emissions
Contributes to the fight against climate change by reducing CO₂ and black carbon emissions. In addition, it reduces deforestation and helps preserve forests, as less wood and charcoal is needed.
- Economic benefits
Lower costs in the long term, as less fuel is required. Sustainable pellets and biogas are also significantly cheaper alternatives to charcoal. Stimulating new markets and employment in the clean energy and sustainable technologies sector.
- Time savings and convenience
People, especially women and children, spend less time collecting firewood, giving them more time for work or school. Modern cooking appliances are also more efficient and faster than traditional open fires.
- Improving quality of life
Safer cooking without smoke or the risk of burns from open flames. Less strain on natural resources, enabling communities to live more sustainably.
